Friendly, bright murals can enliven
any hospital space—just ask my 3-year-old daughter. During her first
two years, she had a considerable amount of surgery and casting to heal
a club foot. The cast room at Carrie Tingley Hospital was a grim, institutional
space, and we dreaded visiting it until I painted a mural of an undersea
world on the walls and ceiling.
"It's just like going to the aquarium," she says
now. This aquarium is different than any real one. The cast room mural
places patients right inside a sea of playful creatures which roam the
walls and ceiling. The cast room has been transformed, and the young patients
find it's a much nicer place to be.
Inspired by my daughter, I've created "Hospital Murals"
as an immediate and cost-effective way to make children's hospitals more
patient-friendly. My murals have dramatically transformed hospital environments,
and have brightened the mood of young patients, parents, and staff. These
"Hospital Murals" can benefit your community in the same way.

When creating an individualized mural, I draw on more than
15 years of experience as a caricaturist, editorial cartoonist and humorous
illustrator. All characters are original, and I'm happy to collaborate
with staff when creating the themes and ideas of the mural. I've even
slipped images of staff into these works, which is a big hit with the
young patients - they love to try to find people they recognize among
the other characters. Donors, staff, or others can be included in the
mural in this way - it's entirely up to you.
Because of these murals, my daughter now enjoys her visits
to the hospital, and this makes the process easier on all of us. Now,
if I can just get her to stop drawing on our walls at home.
